  Answer Mike,
NZ is definitely on our list of places to visit. I'm afraid that once I see your country, I won't want to leave.

Question

Flash & Film Speed for Winter
I love taking pictures in the winter especially when snow has stopped. If there's no sun at all, and just the monochromatic background, do I still need to use flash with my camera even if I'm taking the pictures between 9am to 2 pm? Also, I'm using a manual camera ( Pentax k-1000 ) what is the best film speed for winter photography?
Is it 200 or 400?

- Felicia  Artman 1/21/2005 11:15:44 AM

  Answer Felicia,
You'll get a faster response by just going to the Contact Me page. As long as its daylight, no need to use flash. Snow will fool your light meter into closing down your aperture (or speeding up your shutter or both), because of the white relectivity. Take a reading off the snow and open up two stops (also try one stop), OR take a meter reading off something you judge to be a middle gray (pavement, tree bark, etc). Either way the tones will fall into place. This works for color, too. !oo -speed film will work fine, and give you better grain characteristics, but the 200 and 400 will work fine, too. If you are shooting print film, you can be a stop or two off, and the printing machine will compensate.

Question

General
I just came upon your site and I was in awe of your photos. I am an amateur photographer with a real passion for my camera and capturing beauty as my eye sees it. Your photos have an amazingly haunting quality that I would love to emulate. BRAVO!!!

- ANITA  RETTY 9/2/2004 6:35:25 AM

Answer Thank you, Anita. You will get YOUR vision. It makes NO difference whether you shoot film or digital, as long as you have the control over the medium to show what you see. Sometimes I think my site sends a message that you must travel to take good photographs. Shoot what pleases you, wherever it is.

Question

General topic
Enjoyed your photos, especially the ones from France, Paris and Italy. I have spent the better part of my vacations the past 15 years in France, and agree with your comment that Paris alone offers so many photo ops. Most of my phoros have been taken in the Cote D'Azur area, Eze, St-Paul-de Vence, etc. Next month I will be off on my annual phot trip, this time spending about half of a two week trip in Italy, in and around the Cinque Terra. If you care to, I'd appreciate you checking out my new site at www.jwphotogallery.com. I have just started uploading some pictures. Comments would be appreciated. By the way, I really started enjoying what photography can do for one's soul at an advanced age - I'll be 73 in October.

- Jim Wilson 8/26/2004 4:09:16 PM

Answer I encourage all my readers to check out Jim's gallery. He makes you want to start checking out fares to Europe. I like his compositions, his use of morning/evening light, and his way of getting in close so that there's no doubt of his subject. Keep shootin', and post 'em, Jim.

- Doug N.  8/27/2004 9:18:32 AM

Answer Thanks Doug. Appreciate your taking the time to check out my site, and the comments on my work.

Question

Thanks for taking pictures
I just wanted to thank you for showing us what someone can do if they have a passion for photography!!
One question though.
About 1 month ago after a particularly severe storm I looked outside and saw a rainbow, nothing special you might say-only the sun had almost set by the time I could get outside and take a shot the sight had almost disappeared, the print only showed up like abluish red column of light!! How do you take pictures of rainbows??
Sorry if it seems kinda long but it just seemed strange at the time!!!

- Steve McCroskey 5/11/2004 4:47:24 PM

  Answer Steve,
Basically, be there. I did nothing special on my rainbow shots, I just shot quickly. Be sure you don't have a UV or a polarizing filter on the lens that might change the colors you see.
